Abstract:

"Retrograde endocannabinoid signaling is as ancient and basic feature of chemical synapses as anterograde amino acid-based neurotransmission.

Here I will summarize the recently uncovered molecular architecture of the endocannabinoid system and show a few examples of how cortical circuits exploit this system in a cell type- and synapse-specific manner for different functions. Finally, I introduce a novel rapid approach using STORM super-resolution microscopy, which enables the combination of electrophysiology, anatomy and quantitative molecular profiling of identifed synapses and revealed new insights on how cannabinoid receptor distribution is established on axon terminals."
